When the photos of Ogurin (one of Oguri Shun’s nickname) for Caligula came out, I remember someone asking if he was playing “Jesus Christ.” Well people, not exactly. Caligula is actually a nickname for the Roman emperor, Gaius Julius Caesar Germanicus. An archetypal tyrannical emperor, Caligula was known for his cruelty, insanity and yes, sexual perversion. Due to Caligula’s supposedly colorful life, many plays and musicals were derived from his story.
I don’t exactly know if the Japanese Caligula was based on any of the plays which had preempted it or not. Nevertheless, the plot is undeniably derived from the real Caligula’s story. You can read details of the play in the Oguri Shun community. Well, I don’t know what to say about the plot. I see it as another ho-hum evil tyrant story. A bit more twist please and a bit more angle. Granted, I haven’t exactly watched it myself, so I can’t speak. But with Ogurin dressed in nothing but a strip of cloth, I’d watch the play anytime no matter how mawkish the plot might be.You can find more Ogurin Caligula pics here and here.
